The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania established the Universal

Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) to promote universal access to information

and communications technology services in Tanzania. The Fund is responsible for ensuring

availability of communications service in rural and urban underserved areas in order to

promote people’s socio-economic development through ICT intervention.

The Girls in ICT Day initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a

global effort to raise awareness on empowering and encouraging girls and young women to

consider studies and careers in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The

initiative is committed to celebrate and commemorate the International Girls in ICT Day on

the fourth Thursday of April every year.

UCSAF being an ICT Stakeholder in Tanzania committed to participate in “International

Girls in ICT Day” celebrations organized by ITU by setting up a competition for girls from

various public secondary schools at zonal and national level.

The aim of this competition is to empower and encourage girls and young women to

consider studies and careers in the growing field of ICTs. We believe that this will raise

awareness about opportunities of the ICT sector and empower girls and young women with

knowledge that careers in ICT can be for them.

For the past two weeks, the Fund provided opportunity to 240 girls from public secondary

schools in all over Tanzania around the country by ICT training to equip them with

necessary ICT skills through three main ways that are innovation, knowledge and

experience. The students were trained on how to develop simple computer programs such

as mobile phones applications and how best technology can be used for their benefits. The

competition was organized in the following six competition zones with the zonal centers in

brackets: Lake zone (Mwanza), Central Zone (Dodoma), Northern Zone (Arusha), Southern

Highlands (Mbeya), Zanzibar (Unguja) and Eastern zone (Dar es Salaam).

At National level, thirty (30) best contestants from the zones competed and among them six

(6) best students emerged winners. The 6 winners will represent Tanzania in International

Girls in ICT day commemoration that will take place on April 28th, 2016 in Addis Ababa

The event was followed by a Career Fair, where students had a chance to meet female ICT

professionals and learned abo?ut relevant study programs and job opportunities in the

sector. Inspirational talks were given by girls’ role models including experts, entrepreneurs

and other academicians.

UCSAF believes that, the opportunity availed to these girls including the learning

experience, gives them more determination to pursue technology studies and also gives

them confidence to attempt various technological innovations that will be the change to the

world. In few years ahead from now, advancement in Science and technology in the world

will not be mentioned without acknowledging the contribution of females whose initial

technological attempts have been showcased today.

We believe in empowering our community by involving young female in technological

development to cub the gap. We are the change we want to see in our community by

imparting technological skills to young female we are creating a sustainable community in

utilizing the technology opportunities.
